JOB DESCRIPTION
The digital revolution has fundamentally impacted all parts of our society. Today, computer technology is deeply interwoven with every part of our lives. The digital revolution affected the economy, politics, social life, private communication, education, and even the way affective bonds between humans are established and maintained. These effects are also reflected in the economic development where there are hardly any industries that are not being rolled over by new, digitally-empowered players – from the medical domain to the entertainment industry. The transport sector, as well as highly personal areas of life such as friendship and sexuality, are also transformed by the digital revolution.

Therefore, the goal of our graduate school is to research the role of digital media in the digital revolution and to design, develop and evaluate novel user interfaces and artifacts. These can support us in the transition phase, help building interactive systems that – in the long run and in a sustainable way – are beneficial for humans in their everyday life in long-term use and in the non-isolated environment of a digital ecosystem where a limited set of users are not confronted with only a single technology for only limited time.

For this call, we are in particular interested in applications of potential Ph.D. candidates who want to do their Ph.D. research in the context of ICT and Medicine. Successful candidates will join the Mahidol Bremen Medical Informatics Research Unit (MIRU) and will be enrolled in the Dual Doctoral Degree program between the University of Bremen and the Mahidol University. They will do most of their research in one of the associated research groups in Bremen (Digital Media, HCI, or Computer Graphics and VR) and will spend up to one-third of the time (up to two semesters in total) at the Mahidol University. Upon graduation, students will receive degree certificates from both Universities (cotutelle).

ABOUT US
The position offers great opportunities to conduct independent Ph.D. research in a vibrant and interdisciplinary environment. Candidates should be kin on bridging disciplines from digital media, HCI, cognitive systems, robotics and AI. It is a plus if the candidates are familiar with the challenges of the following three contexts: medical computing, education, and interactive systems, as they are in the scope of the graduate school.

The successful candidate will be working with a dynamic, friendly, and helpful team of computer science researchers. The University of Bremen is one of 11 institutions ranked as a “University of Excellence” in Germany, and a university of approximately 23,500 students from over 100 countries, offering a broad range of benefits such as sports facilities, cultural activities, and daycare.

QUALIFICATIONS
We love to work with students with strong technical skills and backgrounds across disciplines. Candidates should have an excellent Master’s degree or equivalent in computer science, or related disciplines such as interaction design, mathematics, physics, etc. Required skills are solid experience in software development, and a very good command of English (reading/writing/speaking). Ideally, you have specialized in one of the disciplines mentioned earlier and already have experience in academic research. In addition, the successful candidate will be highly self-motivated, passionate about their work, and have good ability to work both independently as well as in a team in a multidisciplinary environment.

CONDITIONS
The position is available for a period of three years (under the condition of job release), with
the aim to complete the Ph.D. within the 3 years. As the University of Bremen intends to increase the proportion of female employees in science, women are particularly encouraged to apply. In case of equal personal aptitudes and qualification, disabled persons will be given priority. Applicants with a migration background are welcome. We encourage in particular students from Thailand to apply but we will also welcome applications from all countries.
